Announcements

KSDE is in the process of developing the FFY 2020 – 2025 State Performance Plan and Annual Performance Report (SPP/APR). This evaluates the State’s efforts to implement the requirements of Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) and describes how the state will improve special education.

The SPP/APR includes indicators that measure child and family outcomes, as well as other indicators that measure compliance with IDEA requirements. There are PowerPoints that explain the indicator changes and KSDE’s final decisions on indicator targets for the next SPP/APR cycle on the SPP/APR page of the KSDE website, https://www.ksde.org/Default.aspx?tabid=520.

Please review the Kansas SPP/APR data visualizations and stakeholder survey results at https://public.tableau.com/app/profile/general.supervision.timely.and.accurate.data. If you have any questions about the SPP/APR please contact Bert Moore at [email protected].

District Part of Kinsa Program

We would like to remind parents that all of our schools are now a part of the Kinsa program. The Kinsa program allows parents to anonymously share diagnoses and health trends with their school community through a downloadable phone app.

Kinsa never uses personally identifiable information, and keeps all health data anonymous unless the parent chooses to post health messages using his or her real name. It is an excellent tool that parents can use to stay informed about what health issues are occurring in their child’s school.

To join your school group text fluency to 555888 on your smart phone. You will receive a link to join. Alternatively, you can go to the Apple App store or Google Play store and download the Kinsa app.

Children's Safety in a Connected World

With kids growing up in a digital age, it can be a challenge for modern parents to monitor their activity on the Internet without becoming overly protective and spy-like.

Keeping this in mind, parents are advised to find the middle ground and take reasonable measures to protect their kids. There are plenty of ways to allow your kids to be connected and socialize with their friends, all the while being safe. This guide is designed to educate and provide useful tips to parents on how to promote safe, meaningful online experiences for their children. Read more ....

You may be eligible for a low cost internet connection at home. The Cox Connect2Compete program is available for families that have a K-12 student and receive government assistance such as the National School Lunch Program or SNAP. With this program, Cox offers high speed Internet for $9.95 per month with no deposits or annual contracts for qualified families and includes free installation and free modem rental. AT&T offers a similar program, called Access, for SNAP participants.

The U.S. government also offers the "USAC Affordable Connectivity Program". The program helps many low income households pay for broadband service and internet connected devices. Click below for more information about these programs.

It is a voice on the other end of the line that can empathize with what you’re going through. It’s a trained person who will listen and help you with simple questions or complex situations. There’s no question too small or problem too big. The Helpline counselors are available 24 hours a day, seven days a week and can refer you to services anywhere in Kansas.

Call the Parent Helpline whenever you have a question or a problem. Don’t wait until “the next time.” When you feel frustrated, upset or confused someone at the Parent Helpline will listen and help.

The Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA)

FERPA affords parents and students over 18 years of age ("eligible students") certain rights with respect to the student's education records. These rights are:

(1) The right to inspect and review the student's education records within 45 days of the day the School receives a request for access. Parents or eligible students should submit to the appropriate USD 261 principal a written request that identifies the record(s) they wish to inspect. The School official will make arrangements for access and notify the parent or eligible student of the time and place where the records may be inspected.

(2) The right to request the amendment of the student’s education records that the parent or eligible student believes are inaccurate, misleading, or otherwise in violation of the student’s privacy rights under FERPA.

Parents or eligible students who wish to ask the appropriate USD 261 principal to amend a record should write the school principal, clearly identify the part of the record they want changed, and specify why it should be changed. If the School decides not to amend the record as requested by the parent or eligible student, the School will notify the parent or eligible student of the decision and advise them of their right to a hearing regarding the request for amendment. Additional information regarding the hearing procedures will be provided to the parent or eligible student when notified of the right to a hearing.

(3) The right to consent to disclosures of personally identifiable information contained in the student's education records, except to the extent that FERPA authorizes disclosure without consent.

One exception, which permits disclosure without consent, is disclosure to school officials with legitimate educational interests. A school official is a person employed by the School as an administrator, supervisor, instructor, or support staff member (including health or medical staff and law enforcement unit personnel); a person serving on the School Board; a person or company with whom the School has contracted as its agent to provide a service instead of using its own employees or officials (such as an attorney, auditor, medical consultant, or therapist); or a parent or student serving on an official committee, such as a disciplinary or grievance committee, or assisting another school official in performing his or her tasks. Upon request, the District discloses education records without consent to officials of another school district in which a student seeks or intends to enroll.

A school official has a legitimate educational interest if the official needs to review an education record in order to fulfill his or her professional responsibility.

(4) The right to file a complaint with the U.S. Department of Education concerning alleged failures by the School District to comply with the requirements of FERPA. The name and address of the Office that administers FERPA are:
Family Policy Compliance Office
U.S. Department of Education
400 Maryland Avenue, SW
Washington, DC 20202-8520
